The big screen is officially bringing back the blocky world of Minecraft. Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, the heads of Warner Bros. film studios, have confirmed that a sequel to this year’s hit A Minecraft Movie is in the works. Legendary Entertainment will once again co-produce the sequel, which is set to come out in theaters on July 23, 2027.
Along with the announcement was a teaser poster that said “Building terrain.” This marked the start of production and got people excited for the next chapter. This confirmation isn’t surprising, given that the first movie did so well at the box office. Even though critics had mixed reactions, A Movie was a huge hit with families, grossing over $819 million worldwide on a budget of about $150 million.
Its success demonstrated the popularity of the video game series, with almost 200 million active players. The people who made the first movie said they chose the title “A Minecraft Movie” to honor the fact that the game is like a sandbox and doesn’t have a single story.
According to director Jared Hess and producer Mary Parent, the movie was not meant to be the official story, but just “one of a zillion stories” that players can make up. This way of thinking is likely to carry over into the next movie. The journey back into the Overworld is officially set for the summer of 2027, but we don’t know much about the plot or the cast yet.
