For millions of people, the Gmail address they picked years ago has been their only one. Because of this long-standing problem, people have had to use old or unprofessional email names.

That could finally change. It looks like Google is testing a new feature that would let people change their main Gmail address. This would fix a problem that many of its users have.

Understanding the Gmail address change feature

A page on Google’s support page has revealed information about a big update. It says that users will soon be able to change their current @gmail.com address to a new one.

Your old email would still be there. It would instead become your account’s alias. All of your current emails, contacts, and data would be safe and sound.

There was no official announcement about this feature’s discovery. It was first seen on a Hindi support page that had been translated and then shared on a Google Pixel forum.

The tech site 9to5Google later wrote a lot about the news. Google has not yet made an official announcement about this change. Their help page in English still says that it is usually not possible to change your Gmail address.

Changing your address will be easy when the feature is available. You would log in to your Google account. Next, go to the settings for your personal information.

There should be a link there that lets you change your Gmail address. If you don’t see it right away, it might not have made it to your account yet. It is said that the rollout will happen slowly.

The ability to change your Gmail username is still in a limited testing phase for now. This possible change would be a big change in policy for one of the most popular email services in the world.
