Roblox has settled with the state of Nevada for $12 million after facing claims that it did not do enough to protect children from online predators. Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced on April 15, 2026, that Roblox will pay over $12 million and implement new safety measures. Ford described it as a “first-of-its-kind agreement” that could become a model for how online platforms address youth safety, according to the Associated Press. At a press conference in Las Vegas, Ford also noted that nearly half of all U.S. children under 16 use Roblox.

How the Roblox settlement changes the platform

As part of the agreement, Roblox will invest $10 million over three years to support local children’s programs, such as the Boys and Girls Club, and other activities outside the digital space. Another $2.5 million will go toward creating a law enforcement liaison role and running online safety awareness campaigns. Roblox is also required to put several safety protocols in place, including:

  • Age verification for all users using facial age estimation technology combined with government-issued IDs.
  • Restricted chat between adults and minors — users under 16 cannot message adults unless the adult is a “trusted friend” added via QR code or phone contacts.
  • Expanded parental controls are now available for accounts of users aged 16 or older (previously limited to under 13).
  • Kids accounts for all users under 16 that block adult-rated content and provide vetted games.
  • Restricted nighttime notifications for minors.
  • No encryption for communications involving minors to aid law enforcement monitoring.

Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman said the company is “proud to have worked alongside Attorney General Ford to reach this landmark agreement.” He described it as a blueprint for how industry and regulators can work together to protect children.

Legal challenges continue for Roblox

Roblox has reached a settlement with Nevada, but it is still facing lawsuits in several other states. CBS News says that cases are ongoing in Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska, and more, with accusations that the platform allowed child sexual exploitation. Reuters also reports that Roblox faces over 140 lawsuits related to child safety.

The Nevada settlement is part of a larger wave of legal action against social media companies. Ford is also suing Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and Kik, claiming they did not do enough to protect children. Last month, courts in California and New Mexico found Meta and YouTube responsible for making platforms that attract young users and ordered them to pay more than $375 million in penalties.

The company has started launching age-based accounts worldwide. In early June 2026, the company introduced Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15. Each group has different content and chat limits based on verified age. If users do not complete an age check, they can only access children’s content and cannot communicate on the platform.

Donch’e King, supervising criminal investigator at the Nevada attorney general’s office, said half a million online predators pursue children at any given moment, often across multiple platforms, with the majority of predatory contact occurring through chat rooms and instant messaging.

In conclusion, Roblox has committed to significant safety reforms and financial penalties in Nevada, but the company continues to face legal pressure from other states over its handling of child safety on the platform.
