Google has made a new open framework available to help agentic shopping grow faster. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) adds a set of AI-powered features that are designed to connect customers, stores, and payment systems so that shopping goes more smoothly.
Agentic shopping will significantly impact online shoppers. Smart software agents now take care of everything instead of just searching and clicking. Google’s new UCP framework gives these AI agents the basic tools they need to do their jobs.
This lets them do things like help people find products, finish transactions, and provide support after a purchase right in the user’s chat window. This protocol aims to integrate previously independent parts of the online shopping world.

The technical foundation of Agentic Shopping
The UCP adds three main features that make shopping experiences more complex and agentic. First, a new native checkout feature lets users buy things from some U.S. retailers without leaving the Google Search interface.
This feature starts with Google Pay and will eventually include PayPal. This feature simplifies the process of visiting other websites and entering new payment information, which is typically a challenging task.
The framework makes a “business agent” that stores can use. This tool is like a virtual sales representative in that it can answer questions about products while sounding like the brand.

Big stores like Lowe’s, Michaels, and Reebok were the first to use this feature. The third pillar, Direct Offers, enables advertisers to present exclusive deals to buyers through AI-powered search modes. As a result, ads are shorter and more useful.
UCP’s status as an open standard, developed with the collaboration of various companies, is a crucial aspect. Google worked with big e-commerce sites like Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart to make the protocol. Its design makes sure that it works with other new agent-focused protocols, such as the Agent2Agent and Agent Payment Protocols.
Companies from all over the business world, such as Macy’s, Stripe, and Visa, have all supported this idea. This initiative demonstrates that various stakeholders are collaborating to standardize the infrastructure supporting agentic shopping.
UCP provides AI agents from different companies and services with a common framework to work with many payment processors and stores. This framework could help businesses adopt AI faster. With smart technology to help people find, evaluate, and buy things, the goal is to simplify agentic shopping in one place.
