Google has released a big update to its Gemini AI platform. Users can now share their custom-made Gemini AI assistants, called Gems, with other people. This feature, announced on September 18, 2025, lets Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise subscribers share their personalized Gems as easily as sharing a file in Google Drive.

Gems are AI experts designed for specific tasks, such as a learning coach, brainstorming partner, career guide, writing editor, or coding partner. They were first available as part of the Gemini Advanced paid subscription in 2024. Sharing a Gem is easy. Users open the Gem manager in the Gemini web app, click the “Share” icon next to any Gem they’ve made, and set permissions the same way they would for Google Drive documents.

This includes deciding who can see, use, or change the Gem to make sure it is safe and flexible. Gem sharing uses Google Drive’s robust infrastructure to maintain workflow consistency, reducing technical issues and speeding up AI use across teams and organizations.

This update meets the needs of people who want to work together. For example, coworkers can now share a single Gem for tasks like helping with meetings, which avoids problems that could arise if there were multiple custom versions. Families can also work together on vacation plans, meal plans, or creative writing projects by sharing Gems. Gem sharing not only makes workflows easier, but it also lets people who don’t have the time or skills to build their own assistants from scratch customize AI.

Google says that Gems can only be shared when custom knowledge is uploaded from a device or Google Drive. You might not be able to share other types of files, like code folders or emails. Gems are kept in a special “Gemini Gems” folder in Google Drive after they are shared. Drive permissions keep them safe, and changes are synced between the two platforms. The feature is available in more than 150 countries, indicating that Google is serious about making AI work together worldwide.

Gem sharing promises to make businesses more efficient and creative. Departments like marketing or finance can make Gems that fit their needs. For example, a “Brand Persona” Gem trained on company voice guidelines can help keep the brand consistent while making more content.

Administrators can still set sharing policies in Google Workspace settings, ensuring Gem permissions align with the organization’s security standards. This update is a big step toward making AI collaboration easier and more common, as Google continues working on Gemini. Google makes personalized AI into a shared resource for everyone by adding Gems to everyday tools like Drive. This improvement lets users prompt less and create more.
