Starting Thursday, Sony will raise the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the US by about $50. The company says that the change is due to a tough economic climate with rising costs.

This price increase applies to all three versions of the PlayStation 5. The standard version with a disc drive will now cost $499.99, and the most expensive Pro version will now cost $749.99. Sony has said that the prices of PlayStation 5 accessories will stay the same and that there are no plans to change prices in other countries right now.

This decision is partly because the US put tariffs on Japanese goods, which made it more expensive for importers. Earlier this year, Sony raised the prices of consoles in the UK and Europe, saying it was because of high inflation and unstable currency exchange rates.

Other big gaming companies have done similar things, so this move is similar. Nintendo raised the price of its original Switch console in the US not too long ago. Microsoft also raised the prices of its Xbox consoles and accessories in different markets in 2024. Players have complained about the rising prices of gaming hardware and expensive game titles.

Many industries are feeling the effects of tariffs. Home Depot, Adidas, and Nike are just a few of the big companies that have said that higher import taxes are making their costs go up, which means they have to raise prices for American customers.
