Ratatan, a new rhythm game based on the popular Patapon series, will be available in early access on Steam on September 19, 2025. This spiritual successor keeps the main gameplay of rhythmically controlling adorable soldiers called Cobuns but adds more complex mechanics.
Players must move their troops in time with the beat while skillfully avoiding damage, which makes the game feel like “patting your head and rubbing your stomach.”
Hiroyuki Kotani, who made the first Patapon game, is working on Ratatan, which will keep it linked to the classic series. The game will also have roguelike features that let players find new power-ups and buffs each time they play.
There will be new worlds added, like a jungle and a garden that has frozen over, in addition to the main gameplay. Players can look forward to new types of soldiers and weapons, which will make the game more fun.
The early access launch date and some features are set, but the game’s price and plans for console releases are still up in the air.
On September 14, the developers will host a livestream with voice actor Tomokazu Sugita to build excitement. This event will give you the latest news about the game, plans for after it launches, and upcoming events.

Patapon first came out in 2007 for the PSP and then had a number of sequels that were mostly only available on Sony’s portable devices.
Some of these old games have been moved to newer consoles like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. Ratatan wants to keep the spirit of the original while adding new content and gameplay ideas for rhythm game fans.
