The social media app Threads from Meta is still growing quickly—it recently passed 400 million monthly active users. It was only a few months ago that the app had 300 million users in December 2024 and 200 million in August 2024. The fast growth of users shows that Threads is becoming a serious competitor to X (formerly Twitter) in the social networking space.

According to Similarweb data, the app’s daily active mobile users are approaching X’s. As of June 2025, Threads had 115.1 million daily active mobile users, while X had 132 million. The number of mobile users on X has decreased by about 15% year-over-year, while the number of mobile users on Threads has increased by over 128%.

Mark Zuckerberg set a big goal for Meta when it launched Threads in 2023: it would become a public messaging app with more than a billion users. The application was designed so that many people could join quickly, but since 2025, features that encourage user involvement have been steadily added and improved. These changes include adding direct messaging and placing greater emphasis on external links, though it’s still unclear whether users will click them.

The app is quickly gaining users and adding new features, making it a major player in real-time public discourse while it continues to challenge the dominance of established platforms like X. Meta wants Threads to be a safe, polite place for people to talk publicly. It will be closely linked to Instagram to draw more users in the competitive social media world.

The fact that Threads is growing and adding new features shows that it is making positive progress toward Meta’s big goal of a billion users. It will also change the way people talk online after 2025.
