Perplexity AI has taken a big step by making its Comet web browser, which is powered by artificial intelligence, available for free all over the world. Before, only Perplexity Max subscribers could get Comet for $200 a month since it first came out in July.

Perplexity has made Comet available for everyone to support its goal of becoming a major player in the AI-driven browser market as competition among big tech companies like Google heats up.

The Comet browser is different from others because it acts as a personal assistant for users. People can use Comet to search the web, organize their tabs, write emails, shop online, and do many other things with the help of AI. Interest has skyrocketed since Perplexity said it would make Comet accessible to everyone. The waitlist for new users has reached millions.

The global rollout is smart because it comes at a time when Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are all improving their AI browsers. For example, Google recently added Gemini to Chrome, Anthropic made a browser-based AI agent, and OpenAI showed off Operator, which uses a browser to do things. Perplexity even made an unsolicited offer of $34.5 billion for Google’s Chrome browser, which shows how seriously it takes this competitive space.

People know Perplexity for its AI-powered search engine, which gives users clear answers and links directly to original sources. Last year, the company started sharing revenue with publishers after being accused by the media of copying content.

Additionally, Perplexity launched Comet Plus in August, which is a subscription service that guarantees access to content from reliable journalists and publishers. Some of its key news partners include CNN, Condé Nast, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Fortune, Le Monde, and Le Figaro.

Looking ahead, Perplexity has promised more features for Comet. Users can anticipate a new mobile version and a feature called Background Assistant, which will enable the browser to tackle multiple tasks simultaneously and asynchronously.

The company’s continued innovation and expansion indicate that the Comet browser is poised to shape how millions interact with the web, providing advanced AI tools for everyday users without the barriers of cost or exclusivity.
