OpenAI is changing what AI can do with the release of group chats, its first feature for having conversations with many people at once. This pilot changes ChatGPT from a one-time tool to a spot where people can work with an AI to generate new ideas with family, friends, or coworkers.

People from up to 20 different groups can join the same conversation after you share a link with them. The platform makes a copy of your private conversation so that it stays the same when you turn an existing chat into a collaborative session. Since everyone in the group knows the same background, it’s easier to plan trips or write projects because no one has to repeat themselves.

How do people work together in ChatGPT through OpenAI group chats?

The AI learns how to be smart in these group chats. Instead of responding to every message, the AI listens to the conversation and decides when to add something based on what’s going on. You are sure to get a response if you say “ChatGPT” straight out.

This makes the interaction feel more real, like the AI is a quiet person in the group who doesn’t speak up when people are joking around. The list of features is very long and includes web searches, file uploads, and image creation. This makes it possible for a team to do research, design, and planning all in one thread.

These ChatGPT group chats should be simple to set up. Pressing the “New People” button in the chat window will begin the process. Then, each person in the conversation is asked to make a short profile so that everyone knows who they are. You can easily find all of these shared areas in a new, clearly labeled sidebar that is separate from your private conversations.

Privacy is a key part of the design. You and the AI don’t use your own ChatGPT memory during these group chats, and the AI doesn’t make any new memories either. This keeps your personal conversations and group activities separate. Younger users are automatically protected more when a minor is in the chat. It’s less likely that everyone in the chat will see private parts of the message.

People in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan can now use this first pilot for ChatGPT group chats on both mobile and web platforms. OpenAI says this is just the start and that they will improve and add to the feature based on early user feedback. This announcement shows that they want to make ChatGPT a place where people can share experiences and work together to be creative.
