Google Photos lets people use memes to interact with their own photos in a new way. With the new “Me Meme” feature, the app uses generative AI to perfectly fit a user’s face into popular meme templates. This update shows that Google is still using its Gemini AI technology in products that people can buy. It has a fun feature that is meant to keep people using it.
The first announcement said that this feature is meant to be a fun way for people to look through their photo libraries and try out AI in a personal setting. This is part of a larger trend in AI features that let users see themselves in generated content, which is something that other well-known apps also do.

How does the new Google Photos Meme feature work?
You can find the “Me Meme” feature in the “Create” tab of the Google Photos app. People can either choose a pre-made meme template or upload their own picture to use as a template. After that, they tap “add photo” to pick a picture of themselves from their photo library. When you tap “Generate,” the AI will put the two parts together.
This function is a test feature, according to Google, and the results may not be the same for everyone. The company says that the best pictures to use are ones that are well-lit, in focus, and facing the front. Google’s AI image model makes this and other fun features in Google Photos possible, like turning photos into cartoons or paintings.
After the AI makes the personalized meme, users can save it to their devices, share it directly on other platforms, or tap “regenerate” to get a new version. A library representative said that the library will get more templates over time.
Features availability and rollout
This new feature isn’t available to all Google Photos users yet. The blog Android Authority first reported the feature’s development last October. Google then officially announced it on their Photos Community site. People in the United States are the first to get it.
TechCrunch says that “Me Meme” will be available to U.S. users on both iOS and Android in the “coming weeks.” When testing out new, experimental AI features, it’s normal for things to take a while. The launch is part of a plan to give users fun, AI-powered reasons to keep using the Google Photos app.
Disclaimer: Google says that the “Me Meme” feature in Google Photos is still in its early stages. Images made by AI might not look exactly like the originals, and they might not be available in all areas or on all accounts. Information about features comes from the official announcement from the company and may change.
